Shared professorship at the University of Singapore

CBN Steering Committee member and research group leader Prof. Michael Givskov, ISIM, have joined shared professorship at the University of Singapore

Professor of microbiology Michael Givskov from ISIM is at 1 August 2011 accepted a professorship shared by Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, where the Danish top scientist in biofilms have been co-applicant on a grant of more than 650 million. £ The dual professorship helps the most brilliant way to concretize Faculty's vision of international research.

The grant is given primarily from Singapore Ministry of Education and National Research Councils to the establishment of a research center "Singapore Centre for Environmental Engineering and Life Science, SCELSE".

The center will have focus on bacterial formation, biofilms. Michael Givskovs contribution is the medical and public health safety-related understanding. The Danish researcher who is one of 5 directors at the research center, examines how and why particular bacterial structures in the biofilm affects the organism and how 'hidden' disease-causing bacteria in the environment through water supply can find its way to the citizens.

In Denmark, Michael Givskov currently examining, whether biofilms is related to cardiovascular disease. It is for example well known that the oral cavity bacteria can be transferred to the bloodstream in connection with periodontal disease, while it remains unknown whether and how the bacteria might, during formation of biofilms, contribute to serious heart and vascular disorders.
